Chelsea are back on track as it looks like they are set to complete the signing of their long-time target Jamie Gittens, who will become the club's new left winger. The Blues will now shift their focus to other positions in need of reinforcement, especially a centre-back and a versatile striker. There have also been reports that the Stamford Bridge outfit is looking to bring in a new goalkeeper.
Chelsea previously tried to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan before the Club World Cup but failed to do so. And it is believed that that chapter is over for the Blues.
Meanwhile, a deal for Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez isn’t likely either, as Fabrizio Romano appeared to shut down rumours of any talks between the two clubs over the Argentine World Cup winner. So, the Blues will have to move on to other targets if they wish to bring a new man between the sticks. And it looks like John Obi Mikel has someone in his mind.
According to Chelsea News, Mikel recently spoke with DAZN. During his post-match analysis, he urged the Blues to sign Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin. He said:
"Again another mistake from Trubin.
“We talked about him before the game. He has had a brilliant tournament so far. Today’s one of those days, he just needed to forget it.
“I still think we (Chelsea) need to get Trubin."
Mikel has urged Chelsea to bring in Trubin as their new number one
Chelsea recently faced Benfica in their round of 16 matchup of the Club World Cup. Trubin, who was in goal for the Portuguese team, made seven saves on the day but also made some mistakes, as the match ended in a 4-1 victory for the Blues.
That said, Trubin has impressed this season keeping 13 clean sheets in 32 Liga Portugal matches. The Ukrainian keeper joined Benfica in the 2023 for a fee of €10 million and has a contract until 2028.
Chelsea’s current number one keeper Robert Sanchez’s future at the club still hangs in the balance following a mixed season from the Spaniard. It remains to be seen if he can manage to stay as the primary goalie or gets pushed down the pecking order in case the club brings in someone new. The possibility of his departure cannot be ruled out either.
