Despite seeing their opening offer for Alex Scott quickly rejected by Bournemouth, Chelsea have not given up on signing the midfielder.
Scott was subject to a £64 million bid from the Blues earlier this week. The Cherries immediately batted it away in the hope of keeping the 22-year-old for at least one more season.
However, after the midfielder recently turned down a new contract, Chelsea remain determined to bring the Englishman to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea given advantage in Alex Scott transfer race
According to Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, despite their initial £64 million bid for Scott being declined, the Blues are continuing in talks with Bournemouth.
Interestingly, despite Arsenal and Manchester United also being strong admiriers of the young midfielder, it could be Chelsea who have the best chance of signing him.
Phillips claims the Cherries want at least £90 million for Scott and that has effectively ruled Manchester United out of the running because they're not willing to spend more than £70 million.
Arsenal, on the other hand, may be willing to meet Bournemouth's demands but they aren't able to offer Scott the same kind of playing time that Chelsea can.
The Gunners already have a stacked midfield with Mikel Arteta not known for his rotation. The Blues present a different kind of opportunity, though.
Xabi Alonso needs technically gifted players with high energy and the door to becoming a nailed on starter would open further if Enzo Fernandez leaves.
Phillips has reported that Chelsea have made Scott assurances over his playing time which has led to him wanting the transfer.
No European football still a big problem
Unlike Arsenal and Manchester United, Chelsea will not be playing any kind of European football next season.
After finishing 10th in the league last season, the Blues will only have three competitions to focus on: the Premier League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
Their lack of elite-level football typically puts them at a major disadvantage in transfer negotiations, but with Scott's main priority being to play week in, week out, the Blues will feel they're well placed.
Not only that, but with Alonso now in charge, a player like Scott could have the chance to learn from the best to take his game to the next level in the hope of breaking into the England squad in time for the 2028 Euros.
During his three years at the Vitality Stadium, Scott, who came through Bristol City's youth academy, scored six goals and provided five assists in 89 matches in all competitions.
