Latest Chelsea-linked winger suggests Xabi Alonso wants Pedro Neto upgrade

Chelsea’s transfer plans appear to be shifting fairly significantly ahead of Xabi Alonso officially taking charge later this summer.

After three years of aggressively targeting young players with long-term potential, there is now a growing feeling BlueCo are looking to bring in more experience.

That shift in strategy has become increasingly obvious following reports Alonso wanted greater emphasis placed on signing ready-made players, including a proven goalscorer, before agreeing to become the club's next permanent manager.

Chelsea’s squad still possesses huge talent, but it has also looked massively inconsistent during key moments over the last few seasons. That is why emerging links to Premier League proven players feel far more believable than they perhaps would have done 12 months ago.

Chelsea among clubs interested in Jarrod Bowen

The latest name to be linked with a move to Stamford Bridge is West Ham's Jarrod Bowen.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea, along with Manchester United and Liverpool, are among the teams interested in the English winger amid the Hammers' potential relegation to the Championship.

The report claims Chelsea view Bowen as somebody capable of providing competition on the right-hand side while also offering cover through central attacking areas if needed. This kind of versatility, along with West Ham's struggles, makes him an attractive option.

Bowen has consistently delivered goals and assists in the Premier League for years now while also developing into one of the most reliable attacking players in English football.

Not only that, Alejandro Garnacho could move on after just one year, Pedro Neto is no where good enough to be a regular starter and Jamie Gittens and Estevao have both been plagued by injuries, so the squad definitely lacks a wide player with Bowen's level of consistency.

Although Chelsea's interest is not thought to be overly advanced, that could change if West Ham end up being relegated next weekend. In order to remain in the Premier League the Hammers not only need to beat Leeds on the final day, but also need Spurs to lose to Everton.

Should Nuno Espirito Santo's men fail to do whats needed, West Ham will come under serious pressure to sell players, and even though Bowen’s contract does not expire until 2030, he will likely be one of the first names out the door.

Potential upgrade on Pedro Neto

A move for Bowen would also inevitably raise questions surrounding Neto.

Neto remains an exciting player, and one of great importance to Portugal, his Chelsea career has never really taken off. There have been moments where he has looked dangerous, but overall, he has largely disappointed since he arrived from Wolves in 2024.

As for Bowen, the 29-year-old knows the Premier League inside out, rarely disappears from games and has repeatedly shown he can produce goals and assists across an entire season, even for a much lesser team.

However, should Chelsea end up going for Bowen, he probably wouldn't arrive as an automatic long-term starter, particularly once Estevao returns from injury.

Chelsea still clearly view Estevao as one of the biggest talents in world football, meaning Bowen could actually become part of a much healthier level of competition in wide areas rather than simply replacing one player outright.
