Newly promoted Leeds United found themselves in the headlines with their impressive performance last season, which saw them lift the EFL Championship after amassing 100 points. The club are now looking to bring in some reinforcements for their upcoming Premier League campaign, and that has brought them to Chelsea as it looks like one of the Blues’ defenders is in their sights.
Chelsea themselves have been looking to bring in new defenders but they are prepared to part ways with some of their current players from the backline who are not in the plans of Enzo Maresca. Ben Chilwell certainly falls under that category as the English left-back has slipped down the pecking order with the emergence of Marc Cucurella, who has been in blistering form over the past 18 months.
So, a summer exit is looking likely as reports suggest that Chelsea are prepared to part ways with the player to balance the books. Leeds United could be his next destination.
According to Football Insider, Leeds United are considering a move to sign Chilwell. Former Manchester United and Blackburn chief scout, Mick Brown, said:
"I think Ben Chilwell is a very, very good full-back and he showed that at times at Palace.
“From what I’m told, there are plenty of Premier League clubs looking at him.
“There are a few clubs short of good left-backs, I know the three promoted clubs have had a look, and West Ham were considering it as well.
“I’d be very surprised if he didn’t leave Chelsea before this window closes, so it’s one to keep an eye on."
Leeds United interested in signing Chelsea's Champions League winner
Chilwell joined Chelsea from Leicester City back in 2020. He has gone on to play in 107 matches for the Blues. However, his playing time has been significantly limited in recent times, with the left-back making just one appearance in the first half of the campaign and was later sent on loan to Crystal Palace in February of this year, where he was part of their FA Cup-winning side.
All things said, Chelsea will need to bring in a new left-back to cover for Cucurella, whether Chilwell does leave the club or not. The Blues have already been linked with versatile defender Jorrel Hato, who could be an option.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and wait to see how the situation unfolds in the coming weeks. It would come as a bit of a surprise if Chilwell is still a Chelsea player by the end of this summer transfer window though.
