Pedro Neto in contention for surprising position change under Xabi Alonso

Chelsea will look like a very different side next year.

Xabi Alonso, who will take charge from July 1, is expected to transform the team.

Not only will the Spaniard make multiple new signings, but his arrival could see some current players positioned in different areas of the pitch.

Pedro Neto could change position under Xabi Alonso

The Blues agreed a deal worth £44 million with Sporting Lisbon for Geovany Quenda last year.

After finishing the season with Sporting, the Portuguese winger will join up with his new club this summer and isn't expected to be loaned out again.

And according to the NY Times, Quenda's impending arrival could see Alonso mix things up with Pedro Neto likely to be forced to adapt to playing in a new role.

The 26-year-old has spent the bulk of his career playing on the wing, but with Quenda and Estevao now part of the Chelsea squad, it could be that Alonso moves Neto to a wing-back role.

There is also the curious case of Cole Palmer. The Englishman can play at number 10 and on the right, and Alonso must find a way to get him back to his best following his recently World Cup snub.

So, pushing Neto further back would allow for more strength in depth and, if he does well, could help take some of the pressure off Alonso needing to sign a new wing-back, particularly after Marc Cucurella's move to Real Madrid.

Neto facing most important season at Stamford Bridge

Neto has five years left on his contract so the Blues' preference will be for him to be a success at wing-back, should Alonso decide that's where he wants to play him.

It's hard to see how the Portugal international will remain a regular starter once Estevao returns from injury and Quenda joins.

Of course, there may also be an option to switch Neto to the left-flank — a position he has played in on many occasions — if Alejandro Garnacho's time at Stamford Bridge really is up.

Garnacho could leave this summer following a poor first season in which he managed just one goal in the Premier League.

River Plate were rumoured to want the Argentine on loan but talk of a move to South America for the 21-year-old has quietened down in recent weeks.

As for Neto, the former Wolves man faces arguably the most important campaign in his Chelsea career.

Since arriving in west London, the 26-year-old has scored 19 goals and registered 19 assists in 103 games in all competitions.
