Borussia Dortmund was a major part of Chelsea’s transfer stories at the beginning of the summer. Jamie Gittens, who had been a primary target for the Blues, officially joined the club recently. That, however, was not without a long-drawn saga with the German giants, who rejected as many as three offers from the Blues before finally giving the green light to the deal.
Now, it looks like the tables have turned, and Borussia Dortmund are the ones interested in a Chelsea player. It was reported a while ago that the Bundesliga club are keen to bring back Carney Chukwuemeka.
Although there had been no updates for a while, and any talks between the two clubs appeared to have cooled off, the situation seems to have recently changed. A move might be on.
Fabrizio Romano posted on X earlier that Borussia Dortmund have reactivated direct talks with Chelsea for Chukwuemeka. The Blues insist on a permanent transfer.
Borussia Dortmund reactivate talks with Chelsea over Carney Chukwuemeka and there's another update
Since then, another update has been posted by Romano on the Chukwuemeka situation. Talks are now advancing.
Chukwuemeka was sent on loan to Dortmund in the second half of last season. The English midfielder appeared in 17 matches for the German club, including four appearances at the Club World Cup.
Chelsea are looking to part with the player, as they already possess arguably the best midfield in the Premier League. Additionally, they now have Andrey Santos and are also in advanced talks to sign Xavi Simons.
Chukwuemeka doesn’t seem to feature in Enzo Maresca’s plans for the future, which wouldn’t come as a surprise to many. There’s no doubt he is a quality player, but he would find it very difficult to get minutes at Chelsea moving forward.
So it now seems to be only a matter of time before the player finds a new club, whether through a permanent transfer or another loan spell. And if negotiations between Dortmund and Chelsea go well and the player moves to Germany permanently, the Blues could recover some of the amount they spent to sign Gittens.
