Chelsea's identity in the 21st century has been based around big spending, fuelling the success the club enjoyed under Roman Abramovich, with this taken to another level since the arrival of Todd Boehly. This summer, the Blues have broken the transfer record for a British player, and their own cub record, to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, when he seemed set to be heading to Arsenal.
At £117 million, that is an enormous outlay for the 24 year old, but does the fee guarantee he'll be a success? Well, let's take a look back at Chelsea's previous biggest big-money signings.

Of the ten players Chelsea have signed for £60 million or more, six have come since Clearlake Capital's takeover of the club in just the last four years. It is not the most illustrious group of Chelsea legends you're ever likely to see, so let's rank them from worst to best, not including Morgan Rogers of course. It would seem unfair to include him, given that he hasn't even trained with Xabi Alonso yet, let alone played a game.

9: Mykhailo Mudryk
Beyond just Chelsea, Mykhailo Mudryk has to go down as one of the worst value for money transfers in football history. In January 2023, it was viewed as a real statement from the Blues to secure the signature of the Ukrainian, despite strong interest from Arsenal, paying £62 million, plus potentially another £24.5 million in add-ons.
However, this has been a disaster from the very start. In just 73 appearances for the club, Mudryk has scored only ten goals, clearly still very raw and not up to the level. Well, he has not been seen since a UEFA Conference League tie against Heidenheim in November 2024. Soon after, Mudryk failed a drugs test, testing positive for meldonium, thereby serving a ban On Friday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed that the 25 year old can return to action immediately, but he'll have to do a lot to climb this ranking and justify his price tag.
8: Romelu Lukaku
When Romelu Lukaku re-joined Chelsea from Inter Milan in the summer of 2021, he was viewed as the final piece of the jigsaw. The Blues had just won the Champions League, while Lukaku had fired Inter Milan to the Serie A title under Antonio Conte, scoring 24 goals for the Nerazzurri that season.
However, the then record-breaking £97.5 million fee did not prove to be money well spent. Lukaku never really settled into life back at Stamford Bridge, scoring only eight Premier League goals, of which three came in his first three games. He was subsequently loaned back to Inter and then to Roma, before being sold to Napoli for £30 million, representing a massive loss.
7: Kepa Arrizabalaga
Despite how inflated the transfer market has become in recent years, the most expensive goalkeeper of all-time remains Kepa Arrizabalaga. Towards the very end of the summer in 2018, seeking to force through a move to Real Madrid, Thibaut Courtois went on strike and got his wish. Chelsea though needed a new goalkeeper so, in something of a panic, activated Arrizabalaga's £72 million release clause at Athletic Club, probably aware at the time that they were overpaying.
Nevertheless, they would not have foreseen how underwhelming the then 24 year old would prove to be. Kepa did make 163 appearances for Chelsea, but conceded 175 goals, racking up only 56 clean sheets. His outings were littered with mistakes, replaced as number one by Édouard Mendy just two seasons later. Arrizabalaga was loaned out to Real Madrid and Bournemouth, quite the combination, before being sold to Arsenal for £5 million, seven years after costing almost 15 times that.
6: Álvaro Morata
Another Spaniard who really did not live up to the hype in West London was Álvaro Morata. After Diego Costa departed in 2017 to rejoin Atlético Madrid, Chelsea looked across the Spanish capital to recruit Morata from Real Madrid for £60 million. Fair to say, these two centre-forward possess quite different characteristics.
Morata scored just 24 goals across two seasons at Stamford Bridge, the saving grace being that he was sold to Atlético Madrid for £58 million, albeit only after an 18 month loan. In a truly weird career, still only 33, he has played for Real Madrid twice, Juventus twice, Atlético, A.C. Milan, Galatasaray and now current club Como, not really a roaring success anywhere, well apart from perhaps with the Spanish national team, the captain as they beat England in the Euro 2024 Final in Berlin.
5: Wesley Fofana
Chelsea in present times are still searching for an elite-level centre-back; when he signed, that was supposed to be Wesley Fofana. Arriving from Leicester in 2022 for a whopping £75 million, the Frenchman had already suffered an ACL rupture, which should have been a red flag.
In four years, Fofana has made 72 appearances for Chelsea, but has missed a further 135 matches due to numerous injury problems, not playing a single minute in 2023/24 due to another anterior cruciate ligament injury. He did manage to start 20 Premier League games last season, a step in the right direction, and, at 25 years old, could still prove to be a success, but Fofana's career so far has been completely ruined by injuries.
4: Kai Havertz
It is a pretty damning indictment of this list that Kai Havertz, not the most popular man at Stamford Bridge it's fair to say, comes in at number four. The German's record at Chelsea was not bad, scoring 32 times in 139 appearances, despite the team being largely dysfunctional and Havertz himself being moved around into a wide-variety of positions. His name will also forever be etched into the club's history, given that he scored the only goal of the 2021 Champions League final triumph over Manchester City at Estádio do Dragão.
Another positive for Havertz is the fact that the club actually made a profit, signing him from Bayer Leverkusen for £62 million in 2020, sold to Arsenal for £65 million three years later. This move across London has worked out pretty well for him, including scoring three times against the Blues during home wins at the Emirates, taking delight in all of these goals, it has been clear to see.
3: Marc Cucurella
As Xabi Alonso prepares for the start of the 2026/27 season, an underappreciated aspect of his squad build is just how much of a loss Marc Cucurella will be. The left-back arrived from Brighton for £65 million in 2022, before being sold to Real Madrid for £51.7 million earlier this summer.
In-between, he was a consistent performer for the Blues, making 163 appearances, never injured and always putting in excellent performances. As Cucurella showcased during the World Cup, he is among the very best in his position on the planet, and will be sorely missed going forward.
2: Enzo Fernández
Splitting the top two was pretty much impossible but, due to his off-field controversies, Enzo Fernández takes the runners-up spot. Six months after he joined Benfica from River Plate for €10 million, winning a World Cup during this time, Chelsea then paid €121 million (£107m) to secure the Argentine's signature. He has since made 169 appearances for the Blues, with the most-recent campaign his most productive, scoring 15 times in all competitions.
However, among other things, he has made his desire to leave clear, which could be an issue for Alonso once Fernández returns following his post-World Cup holiday. The 25 year old is clearly a brilliant player, but it is hard to say he has justified his enormous price tag.
1: Moisés Caicedo
Lastly, turns out Chelsea were ahead of the curve when it comes to spending £100 million+ on defensive midfielders. Everyone is doing it now. One of the Blues' many expensive recruits from Brighton is Moisés Caicedo, who joined for £115 million three summers ago.
Since then, the Ecuadorian has been a generally very solid defensive midfielder, racking up 148 appearances for the club. Still only 24 years old, if Chelsea manage to keep hold of him, he could remain a key figure in this team for the next five years or so, meaning he has to be the best of the bunch.
