Chelsea's disastrous transfer policy has been laid bare after some shocking figures emerged.
Ever since BlueCo took the club over from Roman Abramovich, the focus has been on signing young talent with high potential.
Unfortunately, despite the American ownership spending well over £1 billion, Chelsea have ended up with a bloated squad full of poor signings.
There is no better example of this than Alejandro Garnacho.
Alejandro Garnacho one of three Chelsea players to have transfer value slashed
The Argentine winger might have seemed like a good market opportunity when they paid Manchester United £40 million for him last summer, but they clearly didn't do their due diligence.
The 22-year-old has talent, no doubt, but his attitude and unwillingness to be a team player has always hindered his chances of fulfilling his potential, and it's already been proven.
According to recent reports, Xabi Alonso has already made his mind up on the South American with the Blues willing to offload him after just one season.
Garnacho isn't the only one who has this story, though. There are others, and that's been highlighted in Transfermarkt's recent market valuation update.
Along with Garnacho, fellow winger Jamie Gittens and midfielder Romeo Lavia are among the Premier League's top five players to drop in value since July 2025.
Player | Club | Market Value |
|---|---|---|
Ethan Nwaneri | Arsenal | -£20 million |
Jamie Gittens | Chelsea | -£20 million |
Romeo Lavia | Chelsea | -£18 million |
Alejandro Garnacho | Chelsea | -£17 million |
Savinho | Man City | -£15 million |
Mathys Tel | Spurs | -£13 million |
Rico Lewis | Man City | -£12 million |
Milos Kerkez | Liverpool | -£10 million |
Tyler Dibling | Everton | -£8 million |
Facundo Buonanotte | Brighton | -£8 million |
Last summer saw Gitten join from Borussia Dortmund for £51.5 million with Lavia arriving from Southampton for £58 million in 2023.
Neither player has lived up to expectations, and although patience may be afforded to Gittens following an injury-struck opening campaign at Stamford Bridge, Lavia has appeared cursed ever since he made his move to west London.
Shockingly, the 22-year-old has made less than 50 appearances in three seasons. Constant fitness problems have prevented him from putting a run of games together, and after missing out on Belgium's final 26-man World Cup squad for this summer's tournament, it seems his decline is set to continue.
Therefore, it's no surprise to see that all three have seen their transfer market value slashed in the past 12 months. Their accumlative declines total a whopping £55 million.
Time to cut losses
It would be amazing if Garnacho, Gittens and/or Lavia turned their fortunates around, and while fans will be hoping they do, sadly, reality suggests they won't.
While Chelsea won't get anywhere near to recouping the sums they paid for the trio, the club should still do everything in their power to find permanent solutions.
It isn't just that they're inflating the squad unnecessarily, they're also taking big wages out of the club. The trio earn just over £250,000-per week combined.
The mathematicians among us will know that's over £1 million a month, and with no European football next season, this is a financial hole BlueCo cannot afford to keep digging.
