Chelsea entered the summer transfer window with several areas to strengthen, and the club’s management will be pleased to have successfully addressed all of them, except one that is, the goalkeeping position. Robert Sanchez remains the Blues' first-choice between the posts as things stand.

Initially, it looked like Chelsea planned to bring in a new man to guard their goal following another roller-coaster season from Sanchez. The Blues even pursued AC Milan’s Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup, but the deal failed to materialise, and the French international has remained in Italy.

However, after winning the Club World Cup, Chelsea appear to have made a U-turn on their earlier decision and are currently not looking to sign a new goalkeeper. That said, one of the best keepers in the world seems to be open to the idea. And when that happens, plans are often worth reconsidering.

According to Italian journalist Aurelio Capaldi, speaking on The Transfers Podcast (via Metro), Gianluigi Donnarumma is ‘very interested’ in joining Manchester City or Chelsea. The Italian likes the idea of living in London and appreciates the Blues.

Amid the ongoing saga involving Donnarumma and PSG, the player was left out of the squad by Luis Enrique for the Parisian club’s UEFA Super Cup win against Tottenham. As a result, the Italian keeper is looking to find a new club before the transfer window closes.

Donnarumma played a major role in PSG’s successful 2024–25 season, which saw them win the treble, including the club’s first-ever Champions League trophy. At just 26 years old, the player still has a lot of football left in the tank, or in this case, in his gloves.

Chelsea have previously been linked with the 26-year-old, but the club decided against pursuing him. Will this new development of the player’s openness to join the Blues change their minds? That remains to be seen.
