Chelsea are through to the final of the Club World Cup after defeating Fluminense 2-0 in the semifinals. Joao Pedro was handed his first start against his boyhood club by Enzo Maresca. The newly signed striker impressed everyone with his performance and went on to score two screamers. Although it’s too early to call, if he can continue this form, he might become an important part of the Blues' first-team next season.
Apart from Pedro, Chelsea have also signed Liam Delap as their new number nine. So it’s fair to say that the club’s forward line is secured for the upcoming few years. These two, along with Nicolas Jackson, are expected to be the Blues' options at striker next season.
However, in this new setup, Christopher Nkunku fails to keep his place. The French international had another poor season and it is believed that the Blues are looking to find him a new club. Plenty of clubs from around England, Europe and beyond are believed to be interested but where does he want to go next?
Now, the Frenchman appears to have a preference for his next destination. According to talkSPORT, Nkunku remains on the radar of Bayern Munich and is keen on a move to Germany. He would prefer to remain in Europe and Chelsea are currently waiting to see if the Bavarian giants initiate formal contact.
Nkunku wants to stay in Europe amid Chelsea exit speculations
Nkunku’s career has been on a downward trajectory since he joined Chelsea. In his debut season, he suffered from injury troubles. And by the time he was back, the likes of Cole Palmer and Jackson had established themselves in his favoured positions.
Surprisingly, in the Club World Cup, Nkunku has appeared in five out of the six matches, starting three of them. He has even scored a goal. However, the decision regarding his departure is unlikely to change, and the final could prove to be his last appearance in the Royal Blue jersey.
Chelsea are to face either Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid in the final of the Club World Cup. If the Blues manage to lift this trophy, it will serve as a major morale boost for the squad ahead of next season, which will mark their return to the Champions League.
