Midfielders are all the rage this summer.
Premier League clubs have already spent hundreds of millions of pounds on central midfielders, including Manchester City who recently invested £116 million on signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.
Spurs have also gone big in the middle of the park with the Lilywhites spending a combined £185 million on Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
And although they've so far been quiet making any announcements, Manchester United and Liverpool are expected to make multiple midfield additions with Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton high on both clubs' shortlist.
Chelsea given clear path to sign Adam Wharton
Chelsea also like the 22-year-old, but after failing to qualify for European football next season, are at the back of the queue.
However, the Blues have been handed a massive boost in their pursuit of Wharton after it has emerged other clubs are close to walking away from any deal they might've done for Wharton.
According to CaughtOffside, despite both clubs wanting Wharton for some time, Manchester United and Liverpool have changed their stance on the Englishman amid Palace's huge price demands.
Now with virtually no competition, the Blues are seen as frontrunners for the Blackburn academy graduate. The club are in talks with the midfielder's agents and remain keen to understand the conditions of any potential deal.
Wharton currently has three years left on his £44,000-per week contract at Palace but there have been suggestions the Eagles want to tie him down on a longer deal.
Enzo Fernandez dependant
Although Chelsea have already moved on several players, including Andrey Santos, who is on the verge of being unveiled as a new Manchester United player following a £50 million agreement, the Blues have multiple positions to reinforce.
Left-back is a huge priority following Marc Cucurella's £52 million move to Real Madrid at the start of the window, and although Rayo Vallecano's Pep Chavarria is edging closer to Stamford Bridge, an agreement has yet to be reached.
Then there is the curious case of Enzo Fernandez.
The Argentine clearly wanted out of Chelsea before Real Madrid confirmed they will not be trying to sign him this summer. That has left the midfielder's future uncertain, and with Argentina still in the World Cup, nothing will be decided until the tournament is over.
Only when Chelsea have decided Fernandez's future will they be able to make a final decision on Wharton, because any deal for the Palace star is likely to be the Blues' biggest investment of the summer.
